I have lived in the Palouse area of Idaho since 1983. I have worked with Batik on and off for the past 20 years. Working on the fabric I am able to make wall hangings, scarves and garments. I also teach classes on fabric dyeing in my home studio.
It is exciting to start with white fabric and watch the dyes soak into the silk. I use a wax resist to control the dyes. Wax is applied to areas that I want to remain white when I dye the fabric. I also draw lines of wax onto the silk. As I paint and blend the colors of the dye onto the silk, the wax contains the flow of the dyes. My drawings of flowers, feather, or other images from nature are often the basis of the designs I use on the fabric. Sketches from my travels are what I use for the landscape scenes on some of the pieces. Lately I have been making Kimonos and banners with images from the Moscow Renaissance Fair. I stretch the fabric on a frame as I work on it. For the garments, the sewing is done after the waxing and dyeing. With fabric there is flexibility, the drawings and paintings do not need to remain flat. And so the artwork can be taken off the wall and worn on the body. |
